What’s the Building Permit Process in Ontario? Here’s a simplified breakdown of the typical approval process:

1.  Confirm Zoning & Restrictions
   Check if your project complies with municipal zoning by-laws and other regulations (e.g., conservation authority, soft landscaping, lot coverage). 
2. Prepare Required Plans & Reports
   Depending on the type of project, you’ll typically need a site plan, grading plan, elevation drawings, and possibly tree or floodplain reviews.
3. Submit Application to the Municipality
   The City/Town reviews your package. Incomplete or incorrect submissions can cause delays.
4. Respond to Comments
   Staff may request revisions. Timely responses are critical to keep your application moving.
5. Receive Your Permit
   Once approved, you’ll receive your permit and can begin construction—pending any inspections or conditions.
